Facial aging may seem to occur at a progressively faster pace the older you get. One day, your jaw line appears smooth and sharp, and the next, small pockets of fat have stolen the definition that gave you a youthful appearance. Once the signs of aging are noticed, all they seem to do is compound one on top of another. Sure, you can slow down the process by injecting Botox into the upper face and dermal fillers into lines and creases around the nose and mouth. However, there is something to be said about the meticulous nature of the facelift. Here, we will look at 4 distinct concerns that can be beautifully corrected in one procedure.
The Sagging Jowls
Sagging jowls are a primary age-related concern that both men and women find frustrating. The problem occurs at the point when enough elasticity has been lost to allow fat to accumulate along the jaw line. Technically, fatty deposits settle just around the mandible ligament. A facelift corrects this problem by releasing the ligament and adjusting the muscular structure enough to smooth out the angles of the jaw line once again.
The Double Chin
Another consequence of laxity in the superficial muscle tissue is a double chin. It isn’t so much that fat migrates to the area beneath the curve of the chin, but that the fat that already exists in this localized region is no longer adequately supported and suspended by connective tissue. As the jaw line and jowls are lifted, the curvature of the crease beneath the chin may also noticeably improve.
Smile Lines
Smile lines are referred to as nasolabial folds. These creases tend to deepen as the volume and elasticity in the mid-face progressively decrease. When the facelift redrapes the superficial tissues that support the mid-face, nasolabial folds become less noticeable. Creases that are particularly deep may be treated with dermal fillers or fat injections performed in conjunction with the facelift.
Flat Cheeks
A large portion of the problems that occur across the lower face seems to originate with the cheeks. This highest region of the lower face decreases in volume at a rate of about 1 teaspoon each year. It doesn’t take long for this gradual loss to add up to flat cheeks, and accumulated volume farther down. Facelift surgery can restore a certain amount of contour to the cheeks by lifting the line of support across the mid-face. However, many patients also choose to accentuate this area with fat injections or dermal fillers.
