Jeffrey N. James MD, DDS, MBA, FACS, FAACS
Dr. James is the Peltier Endowed Chairman and Head of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department at Louisiana State University (LSU) Health Science Center in New Orleans. He is a full Professor with Tenure at LSUand has over 10 years of both private practice and academic surgery experience.
Dr. James was born and raised in the small West Texas town of Plainview. He graduated from Texas A&M University where he earned a degree in Chemistry and a minor in Mathematics. He received his Doctorate in Dental Surgery (DDS) from the University of Texas Dental Branch. Dr. James then matriculated into the Louisiana State University (LSU) Medical School where he earned a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. While at LSU, he received a Certificate in General Surgery for completing an internship as well as completed a six-year residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery culminating in a Certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dr. James continued his education at the University of Oklahoma where he completed a fellowship and obtained a Certificate in Cleft and Craniofacial Surgery. He also trained at the Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital in Orlando to expand his expertise to include cranial vault and fronto-orbital reconstruction for craniofacial dysmorphologies. Dr. James then trained at Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates furthering his competency as a facial cosmetic surgeon. Most recently, Dr. James graduated top of his class at the Hull College of Business and earned a Masters in Business Administration (MBA).
Immediately after formal surgical training, Dr. James began his professional career in New Orleans where he held dual academic appointments as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Louisiana State University department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Clinical Instructor at Tulane University department of Otolaryngology. He participated as one of the craniofacial surgeons on the Cleft and Craniofacial Team at Children’s Hospital in New Orleans as well as practiced full scope Facial Cosmetic Surgery and Oral Surgery in private practice.
Dr. James then decided to devote all his time to academic medicine and was recruited to the Medical and Dental College of Georgia to run the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program. Dr. James was dually appointed as a full-time Associate Professor in the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Dental College of Georgia (DCG) and General Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia. He served as the Director of Advanced Education in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Director of Undergraduate Studies of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Director of the Cleft and Craniofacial Clinic at the DCG, Assistant Medical Director of the Augusta University Ambulatory Surgery Center, and Service Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Augusta University Medical Center. Ultimately, Dr. James was asked to serve as Interim Chairman and Department Head of the entire program within the university system of Georgia.
Dr. James is dual board certified. He is Board Certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as well as Facial Cosmetic Surgery. He also currently serves as a Board Examiner for the American Board of Facial Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. James is a Fellow of The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, The American College of Surgeons, and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgeons. He has maintained membership in the American Cleft Palate – Craniofacial Association, American Academy of Cosmetic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Medical Association, and the American Dental Association. Dr. James is proud to have served his Country in the United States Air Force Reserves as a staff surgeon for the Air Force and Army Maxillofacial Surgery Training Program for 10 years.
Outside of work, Dr. James has become fond of traveling and camping with his wife, Aimee, and twin children all over the country in a RV. As a requisite, his second favorite hobby is repairing the RV. Dr James also enjoys hunting, fishing, and being outdoors when time allows.
